Yemen officials have been engaged in violent clashes with al-Qaida terrorists.
Terrorists with al-Qaida stormed into a southeastern Yemen prison on Thursday, freeing roughly 300 inmates, including one of their leaders.
Two prison guards and five prisoners were killed during the attack, the Economic Times reported.
Agence France-Presse reported the freed al-Qaida leader, Khalid Batarfi, was a senior member of the terror organization and had spent the last four years at the facility.
He’s a well-known commander, credited by terror group members with leading the attack on Yemen’s government in 2011 and seizing, over a months-long campaign, huge swaths of land in the south and east.
Al-Qaida members also fought along property bordering a presidential palace in Mukalla, seizing a local radio station headquarters and interrupting broadcasts, NDTV reported.
