President Barack Obama now wants Congress to hold off on a vote to authorize force in Syria so new diplomatic efforts can have a chance to unfold, Politico reported.

Obama made the comments during meetings with senators Tuesday afternoon.

The latest development came as Syria’s foreign minister announced the country would declare its chemical weapons arsenal and sign onto a chemical weapons convention after a proposal from Russia.

Obama is planning to address the nation about Syria Tuesday night.
